Sound Speakeasy

In the basement of Fairbanks hall in Oregon State University there is a speakeasy pop-up. This instillation is in collaboration with the instillation class on campus and the sound design program. There is participation from all art departments around campus however, these are the two that are most prevalent. The space is completely transformed from its usual desolate and slightly saw dusted floors. The space is now filled with found furniture and specially made pieces for the space. Some decorative pieces were even repurposed to fit into the space. For example, the geometric white room dividers were originally made by Cassidy Layton and Sean for the DAMchic magazine’s spring launch party. The pieces were constructed in a cube like fashion that the models could walk through at the spring fashion show. There was also originally a holographic paper that was added to a few of the panels to add interest in the sunlight of the fashion show. Now the pieces are without the paper and have been deconstructed to work as wall dividers. The furniture made to be in that space fits it wonderfully. This space was made for sitting and listening to sounds. There are added speakers to the space and sound boards that anyone can interact with. Every day the instillation is up there is a new event going on in the space. Thursday June 6th, there will be a few DJ’s that are going to put on shows within the space. Wednesday June 5th there will be a number of Oregon State student and faculty that will be showing off their work within the space. The sound boards however, will not be leaving the space. Whenever Fairbanks is open the instillation will be open for any students who want to come and either listen or play around with sounds.
